Description

Theron stared at the book on his desk. It wasn’t supposed to be there. He certainly hadn’t put it there and the staff knew better than to just leave things on his desk like that. Maybe one of the guests had done it. He gave an irritated sigh and picked up the book, checking the spine for the title and immediately knowing where it was supposed to go.

A swish of his tail and he was moving to the appropriate bookcase. The library was empty at this time of night, the last of the small staff had left at least an hour ago and the visitors even before that. He liked the library at night. Peaceful. Just him and his books, because royal library this might be, but these were
his books. He reached the bookshelf and was about to put the book back when he paused.

Where the book in his hand was supposed to go was another book. Another book that didn’t belong anywhere near this shelf. He frowned deeply, pulling out the misplaced book and putting the correct book back where it belonged. Now who had put
this book there? His staff knew how strict he was with organization.

He started towards the next section and found himself baffled again. Where the second book was supposed to go was a third book, also out of place. He switched the books, taking the third book to its proper place and found a fourth book.

What in the depths was going on?

Another four books later, he found an empty space. No additional misplaced book. This was the end of the trail. He looked down at the book in his hands, opening it as if it had the answer he was looking for.

Wait, hadn’t he lent this book to Aylin?

He hadn’t even heard the bettaman behind him, but he knew when he felt those arms wrap around his chest who was there.

“I have caught myself a very elusive specimen of librarian,” Aylin said, beaming up at Theron, who was torn between being glad to see the white halfmoon and being upset about misplaced books. He settled for pouting.

“You know I don’t like my books disorganized.”

“Which is why my clever plan worked so well.” His grip tightened and he smiled into Theron’s back. “I’ve missed you. You’ve been at the library so much lately.”

Theron sighed indulgently. “You know I’ve been caught up with work.”

“Mmm. And very effectively ignoring me.” The librarian felt a kiss given to his shoulder blade before Aylin raised just enough to rest his chin on Theron’s shoulder, one of his hands pulling the book out of the librarian’s grip. “Which is why my pretty librarian is going to sit down with his pretty seer and have a nice, home cooked dinner.” A pause. “And by home cooked, I mean bloodworm salads from that place we like.”

Theron gave a snort. “Are they still giving you free food?”

“I didn’t even have to say anything. They saw me and brought out two salads.”

“Maybe in a bit, then. I need-“

Aylin had reached up again, and Theron growled a bit when his glasses were taken off.

“I hate it when you do that.”

“I know,” Aylin replied, leaning in to kiss him. Even if he couldn’t see, Theron knew the seer was grinning.
